Introduction
Masters in Development Studies is an interdisciplinary program that weaves together a range of inter-related academic disciplines such as International Relations, Economics, Management, Administration, Politics, Public Policy, Sociology, Human Rights, Gender Studies, Environment and Law. The initiation of such a program at IMSciences was felt owing to the huge developmental need of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and adjacent tribal territories. The region has been historically in the spotlight for underdevelopment, conflict, and natural calamities, and needs practitioners who understand the modern notions of development and can provide the necessary skills to complement local, national, and international efforts to bring peace & progress.
Who Will Benefit
The program will be of particular interest to the practitioners working in civil society, public sector management, private sector and academicians alike. Our current students include those working in NGOs/INGOs, international aid agencies, mid- career government officials, national planning institutions, private sector & consulting firms, community based organizations and aspiring researchers. This program is an opportunity for graduates and development managers who wish to pursue a career in the development sector.
Objectives of the Programme
The core objectives of this program are to familiarize students with development theory, policy, and practice; and orientate them with recent trends in the development sector as well as enhance their critical analytic skills to understand and apply the emerging development theories and approaches. The spirit of this program lies in thinking globally and acting locally. There are several courses to choose from focusing on global issues and how Pakistan and our region in particular can assimilate with global trends rather than growing in isolation. In similar vein, the study of recent perspectives in conflict transformation is an integral component of the program. Apart from the traditional focus of development studies program on themes such as gender, environment, rural and urban development, our program strives to provide an in-depth understanding of current global issues in international political economy, alternative approaches to poverty alleviation, and novel trends in public sector governance theory and practices particularly relevant to third world countries.
